Gloucestershire Market Towns Forum's next
networking event will be hosted by Tewkesbury Town Council on
September 29th. These events generate a
wealth of useful information and contacts when member
towns share their experiences about a range of
community projects.
The topic for this meeting will be keeping
town centres vibrant
with people attending invited to share ideas on how
to promote towns at a time of recession.
In addition, there will be brief guided tours of
three of Tewkesbury's own successful
projects. The Forum's Annual General Meeting will
form part of this event - a very brief
part!

The 'Big Society' is already very much alive and
well in Gloucestershire's rural towns, as members of
the county's Market Towns Forum heard at its
2010 AGM
and Networking event in Churchdown.

Around 40 people representing rural towns from
across the county heard about
plans to generate electricity and income from a
community-owned wind
turbine, a parish poll to raise
council tax to keep a swimming pool, and
that local partnerships can cut
costs & get things done!
Churchdown Parish Council's
own major community projects including its new
Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), and plans for a new
£200K
skateboard park and a large pond to
create a wildlife amenity and flood
alleviation, were discussed and information
shared during a walkabout which included a visit to
the public loos, now the
responsibility of the Council!
The ever-popular information exchange covered
everything from how walking
and arts festivals attract visitors to
towns, to working more closely with small
parishes and to finalising emergency
plans. Much of this work in member towns has
been supported with funding
or expertise from the Forum.
Proposals for the way forward for the Forum in times
of funding cutbacks and
changing priorities were also discussed and agreed.

More
than 20 people representing market towns across
Gloucestershire attended the Networking event held at
The Main Place, the new, state-of-the-art community
facility in Coleford. The building,
which opened earlier this year, also includes the
town's public library, a youth section, a unit
catering for special needs, solar panels to supply
some of the power and flexible accommodation to
facilitate varying numbers of hirers.
The theme for the meeting was "Sustainability", and
there was a spirited discussion about how everything
we do needs to be 'sustainable' whether in our day to
day lives, or the projects we are involved in within
our communities. The Networking meeting also gave
member towns the opportunity to talk about the
support they have received from Forum Development
Funding for projects or expert advice from the
Forum's consultants, over the past year or so.
The latest report into recent research commissioned
by the Forum to look at how our High Streets are
responding to the financial climate was launched, as
was the web site.
